Milk Thistle is a natural, herbal supplement that is gentle enough for long-term use. Why choose Pet Wellbeing Milk Thistle for your feline friend? Diabetes: The silymarin in milk thistle has been shown to decrease blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C ( 1, 2). Pets suffering from diabetes are often given milk thistle at least once per week. This decreases the amount of insulin they need daily ( 1). The insulin sensitizers come from a family of compounds called flavonolignans ( 2). Silymarin acts as an inhibitor of aldose reductase enzyme, thus interfering with accumulation of sorbitol which accumulates in the presence of high blood sugar and promotes diabetic complications. Silymarin is potent agent against insulin resistance and diabetes-induced high blood sugar. Varzi, H.N., Esmailzadeh S., Morovvati, H., Avizeh, R., Shahriari, A., and Givi, M.E., (2007). Moreover, the vast majority of molecules to which “hepatoprotective” properties are attributed are mainly included and marketed as complementary feed. These are also intended as nutraceuticals, where a nutraceutical has been defined as “a food or part of a food, such as a dietary supplement, that has a medical or health benefit, including the prevention and treatment of disease” (Interview De Felice, 2011) [ 5] or as functional foods [ 6]. Interestingly, an international agreement on their definition has not yet been reached [ 6]. Denamarin is a liver health supplement that contains the two main ingredients s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe, pronounced “sam-ee”) and silybin. In the past, we’ve had furparents reach out to us to let us know they were able to reduce the dosage of their pet’s medication while using our Mellit formulation, however, we only suggest doing this under the supervision of your trusted veterinarian. Silymarin reaches high levels in the bile and liver (it also reaches significant levels in the lungs, pancreas, prostate, and skin). It can be used in the treatment of feline hepatic lipidosis, chronic hepatitis, cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts), and pericholangitis (inflammation of the tissue around the bile ducts). It may be useful in preventing or treating gallstones by thinning the bile.Denamarin helps to protect liver cells from toxins and inflammatory damage, and improves liver function. This structure of the cell is essential to protect it against damage and prevent the infiltration of toxins and infectious agents. Fortunately, side effects to Denamarin appear to be minimal.
