About this deal

In the same year she painted her infamous Judith , and one of the great Renaissance masters was born.

A riveting novel based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschi—the greatest female painter of the Renaissance—as she forges her own destiny in a world dominated by the will of men. And had me crying, not just emotionally about what happens but feeling helpless about the injustice too!Her licence is taken with the facts to embroider personalities on the characters and Artemisia is depicted as someone who actively doesn't want to marry.

C. Fremantle she has written two gripping historical thrillers: The Poison Bed and The Honey and the Sting . It’s a novel full of very strong emotion, and it’s inspired from the emotion and realism that can be seen in her paintings. I am delighted to say I have never read anything else by Elizabeth Freemantle so I now have seven other books of hers to choose from. The second half of the book becomes quite dramatic as the repercussions of this incident become clear, so if you don’t already know all the details in advance, which I didn’t, it’s interesting just to watch it all unfold. The book makes Gentileschi's father, Orazio, into a bumbling idiot with no talent, even though several years after the events of this book take place, he becomes a noted patron of Queen Henrietta Maria, the woman after whom Maryland was named. It brought the world that this artist struggled in to full life and showed how she continued to rise to make a name for herself eventually. The rise in feminism has brought Artemisia out of the shadows, and she was a very talented artist, so Fremantle has done her a service by representing her skills so strongly. She has accused her painting teacher of the darkest betrayal - he accuses her of being an immoral liar.

Artemisia was an Italian painter, born in Rome, eventually an artist of Florence, and this novel takes place while she is still living with her family in Rome, around the time she paints one of her most famous paintings. As Artemisia did in her own life, we too must not compromise for others and speak truth for all to hear. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Fremantle describes the period when Artemisia lived in Rome before her marriage – and thus the period of her rape and trial. This book will stay with me for a long time, to remember Artemisia's courage in the face of her horrible trials and her triumphs. The characterisation of most of the characters was quite shallow and I felt distanced from Artemisia by constantly being told what she was feeling, rather than experiencing those feelings. This seventh novel takes us to 17th century Italy and tells the story of Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most important and accomplished female painters of her time. I didn’t feel transported to Rome and I didn’t feel any connection to the time the book was supposed to be set in.
