About this deal

Since 2019, all peated production of whisky on the island is being done by our sister distillery at Lagg. Founded in 1993, the Lochranza distillery is rather new in town – at least it was so until new distilleries started mushrooming over the last few years. On the palate, this is a robust dram, with the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries. The fruits assume control on the palate, with juicy, tropical pineapple, green apples, pears and lemon candy, wrapped in a waft of dried grass and a lick of meaty smoke. The palate has the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries before an intriguing finish of citrus, smoke, chocolate, vanilla and coconut.

Despite its reputation as a somewhat traditional spirit, Scotch whisky offers incredible diversity of flavour, with single malts and blends ranging from elegant, floral expressions to rich, fruity and chocolatey drams. Previous editions have been released in yearly batches, but in 2018, the Arran distillers decided that these whiskies had become so popular that they deserved to be a permanent part of the range! So popular, in fact, that the distillery on the eponymous island has made the decision to add it to its permanent range! Although the marketing instils a vision of wild, untamed landscapes and sodden peat bogs, Machrie Moor isn’t very overpowering or complex, and, at around 20ppm, it is one of the lighter peated whiskies – slightly more than fellow Islander Talisker yet nowhere near heavyweights like Ardbeg.

Until recently, Machrie Moor had two standard expressions: a NAS version at 46% and another NAS version at cask strength. Machrie Moor perfectly captures the rugged beauty and lore of the landscape and is named after a peat bog on the west coast of the island where the legendary giant warrior Fingal is said to have tethered his favourite pet dog to a standing stone. d) the right to license, use, sell, archive, reproduce, distribute, modify, perform, publish, create derivative works from, offer for sale, or use of the Service.

So, both whiskies do have certain things in common, but I would never have guessed they were from the same distillery if I had savoured them in a blind tasting.

Peat is also good for marketing – it’s something to hook the aficionados but also helps to sell a rugged and bold version of a familiar whisky. Slightly edgy, but without any off-notes - appears slightly younger than its 10-year-old brother, who was bottled at only 46%, but not significantly so.Delightfully elegant but still complex with notes of citrus fruits, honey and vanilla- this is one .
