About this deal

From the word processor (that's correct) of the Archduke O'Darkness, Garth Marenghi - Chief Frightener, Quakerman and Lord High Petrifier - come three new dark tales. About the Author: Garth Marenghi was born in the past, graduated from his local comprehensive (now bulldozed) with some O levels in subjects. But this Marenghi instalment took advantage of it to be a doorstopper and even more wildly hilarious! The end result was very finely tuned to be both listenable AND recognisable as Marenghi's work - The genre and the gags were evenly delivered.

Really though, Incarcerat was as funny and absurd as expected, the only issue is that a parody of this type of writing can occasionally become a bit tiresome as it indulges in the vices it parodies. The problem is that it's also clear from those sketches why an actual Marenghi book would be unreadable as a result. PORTENTUM: In an escalating series of dangerous experiments, Nulltec tries to unleash and harness Nick’s psychic powers. And there’s an admirable boldness to sidelining the Marenghi analogue character for a vast swath of this, which allows for it to focus its lens a bit more sharply on both an emotional through-line about fatherly duty and also subverting at least some of the sexist tropes it’s homagjng. I mean I'm giving this five stars because it's the best, bad horror writing you will ever enjoy (well, I say enjoy), not that it really matters because as Garth himself says at the end of the audiobook he doesn't care how people rate or review his books.

And the whole focus seems to have shifted in some essential way from writing a comedy AS this character to writing a work of actual sci fi ABOUT this character. It perhaps gets a little overstuffed with ideas in a couple of places, but its worth it for the middle novella, which is an astonishingly good (and very funny) gothic / folk horror pisstake. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. But that's actually part of the problem if you fell in love with the original character; I don't read a Garth Marenghi novel for competence and self awareness. With no Internet to distract me, I dove into Incarcerat by the cold winter light coming in through the windows followed by my LED lantern (whose color temperature is noticeably different). Much of the humour here comes from how overwritten it is rather than actual joke or parody, which eventually loses it's humour once you're past the halfway mark. Will Nick regain control of his faculties, and crucially his particulars, before everyone, including his erstwhile editor Roz, dies horribly?
